COLE HAM
20 months old on September 16, 2006

Cole is still coming out with new words and is now putting two or three words
together. He tries to repeat a lot of what we say.

Cole's new words-
Dada home, dada home dada home (I hear this a lot), door open, park,
soup, go, puzzle, tools, rake, wind,

Cole has gone to sleep two times now without nursing with me, but instead laying
down with John. This huge. Cole doesn't nurse to sleep, but nursing just before
he sleeps, then rolls over and goes to sleep. Since John was able to put him
to sleep, I was able to go see Mel's Flamenco show at the Crest Theatre
in Sacramento. My first night out since Cole was born. The show was great
and I had a really great time.

But that could not last for long. Cole started teething again, as bad as it was
in April when he was waking up every fifteen minutes and throwing up.
He is nursing almost constantly, night and day. This also screws up his napping
and some days he doesn't take any nap or finally conks out at 4pm.
Chicken pox is going around and we are not sure if Cole got it or not. He had
a fever that lasted on and off for a day and then he got a really bad rash with
lots of red bumps with one red bump on his face. Luckily, this lasted for two days
and then cleared up. But we are not sure if he's had it or not. It could have been just
a mild case of the pox.We know five of his friends that have had it so far. This with
the teething has had us up and nursing round the clock. I am exhausted.

Cole still loves tools and trucks. Almost everyday, he picks up his little
screwdriver and goes around the house "fixing things". He pokes the
screwdriver in to all the holes he can find, as well as places where there are
screws. He also spends a lot of time driving his trucks around. His favorite
changes from day to day. sometimes it is the dump truck, sometimes the
wheel loader or the fire engine. He drives them all over the house. He has
small matchbox trucks, bigger wooden trucks and still bigger metal trucks.
He moves and picks up "dirt" either pretend dirt or blocks or balls or
whatever he finds.

Cole is jumping, running and skipping. He is climbing more and has much more
balance climbing up and down. At the park he climbed all the way to the top
of the play structure on the metal rope that has several sets of bars. He also
climbs up part of the climbing slide and climbs down. he is able to climb to
the top of the structure and go down the slide.

You can tell Cole is getting older and closer to those "terrible twos" or really
he is discovering he is his own person. He says no so much more now.
What is working is talking with Cole about what we need to do and
try to have him help too. I prep him the day before by telling him what we
will need to do the next day, like food shopping or volunteering at MSN
or whatever. I prep him by giving him two minutes more to play before I
change his diaper. Communication is key and giving him choices when I can.
He listens and I remind him when he says no after the two minutes that it is
time, that he had his two minutes. I ask him what it is he wants to do if he is
having trouble doing what I need to do.

He still loves reading. He reads at least 15 books a day. Usually we read a few
books to 10 in the morning when we get up. then we may read again before nap
and usually again when he gets up from his nap and then again before bed. He loves
all books. He reads his board books from when he was a baby and also Dr seuss books,
story books, books about animals, and picture books. I have been lucky to find great books
at the thrift store. I try to go there every other week and usually buy about 10 books at a time.
He remembers what the books are about and talks about them during the day. If we play drums,
he will want to pull out all the books with drums in them.

Speaking of drums, Cole loves music. He plays music almost every day too. We have two bongo
drums, shaker eggs, tambourine, guitar, bells, xylophone and he plays music. He sings. He likes
to bring you instruments to play along too. He picks up objects and pretends they are instruments,
tooting on things and boom booming on things.

Cole can blow bubbles. He likes to catch them and then blow them again and I discovered
that this is a lot of fun. Now I do it too.

We went to a wedding recently. Cole had a great time. He ran around following behind some
other kids, he danced with a girl, he grabbed the disposable camera and took pictures
of almost everyone at the wedding. He is such a charmer. He would go up to someone, wait
till he had their attention and show them the camera, and then take a picture. Luckily, he
wasn't that good at winding it so he only really took a few shots. but because he was so
adorable, almost everyone at the wedding took his picture after he took their's. We made
lots of friends that night. I almost forgot to mention the best part of that day. We had a
little tuxedo that was a hand me down. Cole had not worn it yet. I wasn't sure I wanted
him to wear it, but we tried on the pants and they fit perfectly. Once he saw his dad putting
on his suit, Cole wanted to wear one too. He kept saying "tie", so John cut one of his own
ties to fit on Cole and Cole had a tie too with his white shirt and jacket.
